Daisy Pulls It Off captures the uncomplicated innocence of Angela Brazil’s schoolgirl novels.   The play follows spirited newcomer Daisy Meredith as she attempts to step beyond her poor elementary school background and find acceptance in the snobby confines of Grangewood School for Young Ladies.

Daniel Pembrey Night Market book signing, noon – 1pm, Saturday 27th May

Author Daniel Pembrey will be signing copies of his new book Night Market at the Cobham Bookshop from noon until 1pm on Saturday 27th May.

This will be the second book signing with Daniel at the Cobham Bookshop, which held a book signing for his debut novel The Harbour Master. This first book in the Henk van der Pol detective series set in Amsterdam met with great success with customers and critics, with the Financial Times announcing that “Pembrey is a debut novelist of rare skill, marshalling his material with rigour and intelligence”.

Readers who enjoyed The Harbour Master and were left guessing about the unresolved loose ends can look forward to catching up with the detective where the first novel left off.  Night Market follows Henk van der Pol as he begins a new investigation under pressure from prominent government figures in The Hague. With van der Pol pressured to infiltrate a team investigating internet child exploitation, and seeking justice while his own life is in danger, Night Market promises to take its protagonist and its readers on a tense and thrilling journey.

Fans of Henning Mankell and contemporary crime fiction may want to try this new detective series and explore the twists and turns of criminal life in Amsterdam with a compelling central character to guide them.

Join Daniel Pembrey at the Cobham Bookshop at noon on Saturday 27th May to buy signed copies of his novels and learn more about his work.

#JPLovesBookshops Thank you event
Having received a James Patterson grant last year we were invited to say thank you in person on Monday 9th May at Penguin Random House offices on The Strand. James Patterson was charming, his speech was very funny but also highlighted his passionate belief in the connection between independent bookshops and children’s literacy. Having given over £500,000 to independent bookshops in the UK, along with huge amounts to bookshops and libraries in the USA, he is using his success as a writer to encourage children from all backgrounds to benefit from the enjoyment, job opportunities and versatility that a strong reading ability brings.

Cobham Players present Death In High Heels

death in high heelsThursday 21st, Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd April. Tickets £12 each with Buy One Get One Free offer on Thursday evening and Saturday matinee.

It’s a big day at Cristophe et Cie, a small couture house off Regent Street. Mr Bevan will announce which of his staff he is sending to France to be general manager of a new branch in Deauville. Will it be talented and elegant Miss Doon or the loyal and long-serving Miss Gregory? Perhaps senior saleswoman Irene or showroom manager Dorian will get the job. Events take a dramatic turn over lunch when Miss Doon collapses and dies, poisoned by the oxalic acid crystals that another employee, Rachel, has been using to clean her hat.

Inspector Charlesworth and Sergeant Wyler have a murder enquiry on their hands. Behind the glamour and gossip of a 1930s fashion house, secrets and lies are rife and more than one person may have harboured resentment towards Miss Doon. Richard Harris’s thrilling play is based on Christianna Brand’s debut crime novel.

Call the bookshop on 01932 862903 to reserve your tickets.

We are delighted to announce that the author will be joining us to sign copies of her excellent new novel Astonish Me. Join us from 10am on Wednesday 28th May to meet Maggie Shipstead and pick up signed copies of both her books. For our review of Seating Arrangements please see our Staff Recommendations page; the synopsis of Astonish Me is below.

Astonish Me

Rewarding read ? Dylan Thomas prize winner Maggie Shipstead.Seating Arrangements

Astonish Me:
From the prize-winning author of Seating Arrangements comes an exquisitely written, fiercely compelling glimpse into the demanding world of professional ballet and its magnetic hold over two generations. Astonish Me is the irresistible story of Joan, a young American dancer who helps a Soviet ballet star, the great Arslan Rusakov, defect in 1975. A flash of fame and a passionate love affair follow, but Joan knows that, onstage and off, she is destined to remain in the shadows.

After her relationship with Arslan sours, Joan decides to make a new life for herself. She quits ballet, marries a good man, and settles into the rhythm of Californian life with their son, Harry. But as the years pass, Joan comes to understand that ballet isn’t finished with her yet: for there is no mistaking that Harry is a prodigy.

Inevitably Joan is soon pulled back into a world she thought she’d left behind and back to Arslan. Gripping and dramatic, Astonish Me is a story about the nature of talent, the choices we must make in search of fulfilment, and how we can never truly escape from the secrets of the past.
